Oklahoma Field Trialing

Please browse this site for trial dates, judges and locations.  OFTCA site will be updated periodically.  OFTCA does not guarantee the accuracy of the information listed in this site.  Official records should be checked through The American Field.

OFTCA (Oklahoma Field Trial Clubs Association) is made up of individual clubs in Region 8.  See “clubs” tab for a list of clubs.  OFTCA provides oversight and assistance to member clubs as well as promote the time honored tradition: bird dogs and field trialing.  OFTCA follows rules set by the AFTCA.

OVERVIEW FOR BEGINNERS: field trialing is a sport born in the late 1800s.  The bird dogs are loosed to hunt in pairs.  In Oklahoma, thier quarry is bobwhite quail or pheasant.  The dogs are judged on thier ability to hunt while remaining in contact with thier handler.  The style and intensity of a dog while hunting and around thier game is also a factor.  After all entered dogs have hunted, the judges announce the dogs placements.  These placements are recorded permanently on thier pedigree.

Once a dog has had a placement (excluding puppy age catagories), the dog is eligible to complete in championship trials.  See the schedule for upcoming championships.

Trial types are:

Walking-handlers walk while the judges and gallery are mounted.  These are the closest ranging dogs and hunt at a walking pace.

Shooting Dog (SD)- handlers, judges and gallery are mounted.  These dogs will range further and hunt at a horseback walking pace.

All-Age (AA)-handlers, judges and gallery are mounted.  These dogs will range to the extreme while making periodic contact with the handler.

Since judging, observing and often handling is done horseback, it can be difficult for a beginner to attend and participate in a field trial.  If you have a dog you would like to enter or would like to observe a trial but do not own a horse, consider our mentor program.  For assistance through our mentor program, contact Preston Trimble or Jon Humphrey for details on the program.

4.         DOG OF THE YEAR AWARDS

A.                  Points are accumulated for seven categories in horseback stakes:  Amateur Puppy (all-age), Amateur Puppy (shooting dog), Amateur Derby (all-age), Amateur Derby (Shooting Dog), Amateur All-Age, Amateur Brittany All-Age, and Amateur Shooting Dog, will be totaled from September 1 of one year to May 1 of the following year, with the awards dinner to be held at the annual meeting.

B.                   Points shall be awarded on the basis of:

1st place =  50 points X number of dogs actually starting

2nd place = 30 points X number of dogs actually starting

3rd place = 20 points X number of dogs actually starting

Bonus points for wins in amateur stakes of one-hour duration shall be given as follows:

1st place =  50 points X number of dogs actually starting

2nd place = 30 points X number of dogs actually starting

3rd place = 20 points X number of dogs actually starting

Points for wins in one-course trials, except puppy stakes, shall be divided in half.

C.                   In order for a dog to receive points in the Dog of the Year program, it must be registered in FDSB, except puppies, and a puppy must be eligible for registration, and must be registered in the field trial season in which the points are earned.

D.                  No points shall be awarded unless a member club holds the trial, and is in good standing of the OFTCA and the Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America.

E.                   Reports of wins must be forwarded to the Secretary/Treasurer of OFTCA within fourteen days of the conclusion of each trial.

F.                   Each member club is entitled to hold one points trial per field trial year (either fall or spring) on their traditional dates, based on that club’s seniority.  In addition, each club may hold another point’s trial during the other season provided that trial does not conflict with a club, which is holding a point’s trial on its traditional date.  Once the Board of Directors has approved the Field Trial Schedule, a club may not change its trial dates without approval of the Board (this can be done by mail or phone if necessary).

G.                   In order to qualify as a trial awarding points toward the Dog of the Year, the trial must meet the following requirements:

1.                    The Club’s advertisement in the American Field must include the announcement that this trial is an “OFTCA Points Trial.”  The advertisement should list the names of the judges for each stake to be run, however, the judges for each stake must be announced immediately prior to the drawing of such stake, and after they have been announced shall not be changed unless there has been a valid emergency.

2.                    The drawing must be held within forty-eight hours of the time the trial is to begin running, and must be held at a location accessible to all potential handlers.

3.                    The advertisement shall announce the standard to be used in judging puppy and derby stakes (that is, whether or not they are being run as potential shooting dogs or all-age dogs).  If the standard to be used is not advertised, a puppy or derby stake shall be considered to be run at an all-age standard and dog of the year points shall be awarded accordingly.

4.                    In order for an annual award to be given in any category, a stake in that category must have been run in at least three different trials.
